Pupil Premium Intro

The Pupil Premium Grant was introduced in April 2011 by the Government to provide additional funding to address the gap in educational attainment and long-term economic well-being between socially disadvantaged children and young people compared to their peers. The reasons for this correlation are complex and no actual causal relationship has been proven.
 
It was allocated to children from low income families, who were known to be eligible for Free School Meals, and children who had been looked after continuously for more than six months.
 
Eligibility for the Pupil Premium funding for 2012-2013 was extended to pupils who have been eligible for Free School Meals at any point in the last six years (known as the Ever6 Free School Meals measure).
 
Schools also receive funding for children who have been looked after continuously for more than six months, those that have been adopted and a smaller amount for the children of service personnel. 

 
 

Could your child be eligible for a Pupil Premium grant?

Children qualify for free school meals – and accordingly pupil premium – if you receive any of the following benefits:

  • Universal credit (provided you have a net income of £7400 or less)
  • Income support
  • Income-based jobseekers’ allowance
  • Income-related employment and support allowance
  • Support under Part IV of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
  • The guaranteed element of state pension credit
  • Child tax credit, provided that you are not also entitled to working tax credit and have an annual gross income of £16,190 or less

Children also qualify if:

  • Children are in care
  • Children previously in care who have been adopted, or who have a special guardianship order, a child arrangements order or a residence order
  • Children recorded as being from service families

 

If your child qualifies for free school meals, it’s important that you tell us. Even if they're in Early Years or KS1 and receive universal school meals for infant pupils, or are in KS2 and take a packed lunch – as this enables us to claim pupil premium.

We are aware that the Covid 19 pandemic has seen some personal circumstances change dramatically. Many have lost income and some families may now be eligible for Free School Meals, but are unsure if they are entitled or how to apply.

How is the funding used?

We use our Pupil Premium funding to develop the whole child and ensure each child reaches their full potential and has high aspirations for their future.  A large proportion of our funding is dedicated to fund additional adults to support children in reading, writing, maths and emotional support through Thrive sessions. In addition, we use funding to develop cultural capital experiences through extra-curricular clubs funding; support for residential visits; uniform and equipment funding. 11 by 11 is our pledge to allow all our children to experience 11 cultural opportunities whilst at Scargill. We are dedicated in ensuring our children leave us with a wide variety of memorable experiences which encourage, build on and enhance life long skills. Our list has been created by our whole school community to ensure it is bespoke to our children’s needs. We want our children to be challenged, inspired and experience our awesome world.
